Good morning,
Here’s your Tuesday edition of Asia AI News.
No funding news to report today.
We can expect the Indian media to be focused on the Union Budget of India 2020-2021, with Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expected to present her first full annual budget on Saturday.
The tech sector, in particular, is speculating on what progress has been made since her inaugural budget speech last July. The Indian economy has been widely seen to be losing momentum and after Prime Minister Modi has put his stake in the ground for a digitally-enabled $5 trillion economy, the pressure is on. Critics of the Minister’s budget speech in July accused her of being too vague: big on vision, but lacking the road map India needs to meet the ambitious goals set by the government, including those to become a global artificial intelligence leader.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration piles on the pressure on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is chairing a meeting of the National Security Council today, during which the council is expected to decide whether to ban Huawei equipment from Britain’s 5G networks. The US threat is that any acceptance of Huawei will have severe consequences for UK-US relations.
It could be quite an interesting week!
