Good morning, Here’s Monday’s edition of Asia AI News! Not much news to share today, so I’ll start with a recap of India’s AI strategy deliberations! It now seems possible that 2020 may close without a decision on the implementation of India’s national artificial intelligence strategy. A policy decision from the cabinet was expected during the last couple of months, but so far there’s no news. It’s now more than a year since a committee was formed by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and think tank NITI Aayog to agree steps for implementation. In 2018, think tank NITI Aayog was given the mandate to develop AI strategy and published a discussion paper ( PDF) on its AI strategy in June 2018.
September 2020 - Minister of state Rao Inderjit Singh says that MeitY is in the process of writing a cabinet note on AI strategy implementation for approval.
October 2020 - NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant says, on October 3rd, that policy decision was expected on AI strategy implementation within 60 days.
November 2020 - NITI Aayog issued a draft recommendation on setting up an oversight body for the national AI strategy. Meanwhile, the delays in India’s national AI strategy, don’t seem to have affected its standing in Tortoise Media’s annual Global AI Index. The US, UK and China are ranked first, second and third in the Index, while South Korea, Singapore, Japan and India are ranked 8th, 10th, 14th and 20th respectively. Have a great week ahead! /Carrington
