Well, this is awkward. There was practically no Asian AI news yesterday!
A week or two before I started this newsletter - oh, let’s call it early June - I decided to try a few dummy newsletters to see how long it would take me to research, create and edit this. I had to completely give up twice, because the sheer volume of AI news coming out from Asia: it was just too much to assimilate. And now we’ve reached the middle of the summer…
In the meantime, here are a few interesting stories that you might like to take a look at. Among them, a South China Morning Post report on the investment between the US and China plunging 18 per cent to $13 billion in the first six months of 2019, according to a study conducted by the Rhodium Group and the U.S. National Committee on US-China Relations.
Now, H1 investment is at its lowest level since 2014. However, cross-border investment in AI ventures between the US and China has bucked the trend over the past five years and, despite a decrease during he second half of 2018, was still looking good. So, what was the cross-border investment in AI ventures in particular, during the first six months of 2019? I’ve not seen a detailed analysis of that yet.
China Money Network did release some preliminary estimates of investment in China AI ventures at WEF’s Dalian Annual Meeting of New Champions a couple of weeks ago. According to CMN, the number of VC deals in China’s AI sector as of mid-June stood at 131, with a total deal value of $5.6 billion, compared with 496 venture deals and $15.7 billion in total deal value for the whole of 2018. That obviously doesn’t talk to the respective volumes of cross-border investment from China or the U.S., but that’s all I’ve got. When I have more, you’ll be the first to know!
