Good morning,
The UAE’s artificial intelligence ambitions passed another milestone this week, with the establishment of the world’s first graduate-level, research-based AI university on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi.
The Mohammad Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) also has significant Chinese expertise and participation. The new university counts Tsinghua University’s Professor Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, former Microstrategy CTO Peng Xiao and computer scientist, tech leader, entrepreneur and author Dr. Kai-Fu Lee among its board of trustees.
MBZUAI is affiliated with Abu Dhabi’s Inception Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IIAI) and shares three of its board of trustee members with the institute’s Scientific Advisory Committee. The IIAI’s CEO is Ling Shao, former chair professor of the University of East Anglia in the UK.
In July, the the Abu Dhabi Investment Office announced a deal with SenseTime to establish the firm’s EMEA research and development centre in Abu Dhabi, generating hundreds of AI-related jobs (see Asia AI 24 July). These moves combined start to position Abu Dhabi as a credible and growing centre for AI research and development.
Lots more news below, including Amazon’s announcement that Alexa users in India can now pay their utility bills with Amazon Pay via the voice assistant; and Germany’s decision to allow Huawei to participate in 5G bids.
Have a good day! TGIF!
